We're BERRY excited to bring you the following!

 

This is a very exciting week for us.  We have had a lot of firsts this year and you all have been with us through them all….NOW, WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SUSTAINABLE CITRUS!

Thorpes Organic Family Farm has partnered with us to bring some sunshine and much needed winter vitamins to our Yellowbird Family.  Over the next couple of weeks you will be seeing oranges, OJ, strawberries, grapefruit, and yucca.  

We don’t plan on looking outside of Ohio every week, but when we met these folks we saw an opportunity to expand our reach to get some things that we have never had before.  

They are a multi-generational farm that is working on all the right things. From their website:

“We focus on growing certified organic produce using sustainable farming methods in order to improve the soil life of our land, and the health of the community around us. We do not use any chemical herbicides, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, or otherwise dangerous chemicals. Instead, we employ time-tested farming methods such as organic fertilizers, beneficial insects, cover crops, frequent crop rotation, and organic rock powders and minerals to improve soil life and nutrients.”

When we pick things for you each week, we are trying to get things you can’t get anywhere else.  In this case, you may be the ONLY PEOPLE IN OHIO to have this super small batch, organic citrus from Florida.  “Thanks WHOLE FOODS/AMAZON/KROGER/ANYONE ELSE, we’ll take it from here!”

Gayle Thorpe has made this farm a family affair.  Her 6 children and 7 grandchildren are working together to bring clean food and sustainable agriculture to their customers.

Valencia Oranges

Storage:   If you don't have a lot of apples, the refrigerator is a good option. Place them in the crisper drawer in an opened container with holes in it or cover the apples with a damp paper towel.

 

Tokyo Bekana

Storage:   Store greens in a container with a paper towel to absorb moisture. If they wilt a little, trim the stems and stick them in a glass of water in the refrigerator overnight. Remove the stems and rinse the leaves just before eating.

Artisan Hydro Lettuce

Storage:   Store greens in a container with a paper towel to absorb moisture.

Make traditional salads, spring rolls, lettuce roll ups and more!

Rainbow Carrots

Storage:  Carrots can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month if stored properly. Cut off carrot greens, place carrots in a containers with lid and cover completely in water. Keep container in the refrigerator, changing the water ever 4-5 days.

Spinach 

Storage:    Store fresh spinach in a clean container wrapped with paper towels. Place it in the refrigerator in the crisp drawer to save the greens for up to ten days. Containers will protect the greens from being moved around or crushed like they would in bags. Paper towels absorb the moisture, and keep your spinach fresh.

Red Meat Radishes

Storage:   Remove the leaves and store radishes in the crisper of the refrigerator. They will keep for up to a week. If storing the greens consumer within 3 days.

Storage:   Store in refrigeration. 

 


Loose Beets

Storage:  The root bulbs should be stored in the refrigerator's crisper for seven to 10 days. Cooked beets may be refrigerated up to one week. Fresh cooked beets may also be frozen up to 10 months, either whole or cut.

Beet Greens

Storage:   Store the leaves in a separate container and use within two days.

Lacinato Kale

Storage:   For a bunch of whole leaves, it's all about avoiding excess moisture. Wrap the bunch of kale in a layer of paper towels, and store in a container in the refrigerator crisper drawer. The kale should be in great shape for 3-5 days.

Lettuce Mix // Spring Mix

Storage:   Wrap the lettuce in a dry paper towel and place it in a storage container. You can reuse the container it came in, as long as you wash it first. To maintain the proper temperature and moisture level, store your lettuce in the crisper drawer in your fridge.

Butternut Squash

Storage:   Store your fresh, uncut squash in a cool, dark place, such as a basement or closet, where sunlight won't hasten its ripening. Under the right storage conditions, your butternut squash should last two to three months.

Strawberries

Storage:   Arrange the berries on a paper towel-lined tray and cover with beeswax wrap and refrigerate. Wash the berries under cool water and remove stems before eating.
