Box #27

4 of our drivers went out yesterday like the 4 winds to the 4 corners of the state.

What they brought back around 7pm last night was over 32 varieties of produce from over 15 farms….

Logistical nightmare?  Yes

Worth every minute and mile?  Absolutely

We are at a critical point where we need to change the way we do our newsletter and item list each week.

  1.  We are posting our newsletter each week on our blog so that everyone can have access to it….we will still email it through mailchimp but lots of times that can get lost or pushed to spam...or accidentally deleted.

BLOG

  1.  Instead of trying to list what might be in your boxes by size, we are just going to post the entire list of what is available this week.

  •  When you buy food like we do, FAVORING the GROWER and MOTHER NATURE, you are never quite sure how much will be coming in.

Sometimes we have too much, in which case everyone gets a bigger portion

Sometimes we have too little, in which case, some people get a different item

  •  Because we do it this way, the grower is able to have the confidence that we won’t turn them away (as most companies like us would do), just because they were working within the confines of whatever the earth had for us that week.

**  I say all that because we don’t even know how things are going to look from one day to the next...we do however have a magic spreadsheet that has 70 columns and 100+ tabs that allows us to plug everything in so that we know you are getting

1.  The Most Possible Food For Your $$
2.  ALL the varieties possible throughout the seasons

HOW ABOUT THAT OUTLINE FOLKS??  My 6th grade teacher that taught me to take notes would be so proud.

AND DON’T FRET!  If you think you were shorted something, you can still email erin@yellowbirdfs.com and she will give you the benefit of the doubt 87.77% (not based on actual data) of the time.

Disclaimer: These are the items we have planned for you to get this week! However, due to the nature of... well, nature, these items are subject to change. If we are unable to put a planned item in the box we will do our best to substitute it for a cost comparable item in this box, or in a box in the future. Different size boxes allow for different items, either by type or by quantity.

The items in each box vary and no box will include the entire list above. Fulls will have the greatest variety, and bases will have more variety than the minis.

Alfalfa Sprouts

Storage:   Place the sprouts in a container with a wet paper towel to keep them moist.

Artisan Cherry Tomatoes

ASPARAGUS

Storage:   Stand the asparagus up in a glass or jar with about an inch or two of water, making sure all the ends are sitting in the water. Loosely cover the asparagus with beeswax and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Collard Greens

Storage:   To store fresh collard greens, place the greens in an air-tight container without washing them first.

English Shell Peas (inedible pods)

Storage:   Peas don't have much of a shelf life, so we don't recommend storing them —in their pods or shelled—for very long. Store pods in their container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator and use them within a couple of days. Once they're shelled, the best way to store peas is to freeze them.

Old Fashioned Creamy Potatoes and Peas

Green Beans

Storage:   Store unwashed fresh beans in a reusable container n the refrigerator crisper. Freezing Green Beans: Rinse your green beans in cool water and then drain. Cut the ends of the beans off and then cut the beans to whatever length you prefer.

Recipe: Ten Minute Sheet Pan Turkey Melts

Kohlrabi

Storage:   Remove any leaves (and reserve them for later – they are quite tasty as well) and keep the bulb in the fridge, wrapped in a moist kitchen towel in the vegetable drawer. This will keep your kohlrabi crunchy for about a week.

Lacinato Kale

Storage:   For a bunch of whole leaves, it's all about avoiding excess moisture. Wrap the bunch of kale in a layer of paper towels, and store in a container in the refrigerator crisper drawer. The kale should be in great shape for 3-5 days.
