First off, I’d like to address the recall on Peaches this week. Here is the breakdown…
Prima® Wawona is recalling the peaches as a precaution in connection with a Salmonella outbreak under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that is suspected to have caused the illness of more than 60 people in nine states.

THIS DOES NOT AFFECT US! OUR PEACHES ARE NOT A PART OF THIS RECALL.
Here is what happens. Many farms belong to a cooperative of sorts that takes all their peaches and brings them through 1 big facility (In this case in California) that packs them in those little plastic packages. Each of the big box stores that they get sent to, has their own “white label” or “private label” that make them look special. They are not special...they are all the same peaches.
The Salmonella problem is most likely NOT from any of the farms, but rather from the processing facility where all these peaches are getting mixed together and then put into all those little plastic bags, boxes, and shipped around the county to the stores that were listed in that article i.e. Aldi, Walmart, Kroger, and Target.
Folks, this is precisely why we are building what we are building.
Are we immune from ever having Salmonella or E.Coli in our facility? Of course not. We do our best (especially in light of Covid) to disinfect, degrease, clean, and sanitize every square inch of the place...but let’s just say we DID get something. At worst, how many people is it affecting? All of us together would be under 2000 families in any given week….all within a few hundred miles of each other here in Ohio.
So a de-centralized food system makes the entire country safer as it is very easy to contain any emergencies that might occur.
In other words, if there were 500 companies like Yellowbird out there that were supplying our foodshed’s, anytime something bad happened it would be very easy to contain, vs. trying to guess where millions of bags of peaches went because we are trying to supply a gazillion people with the same doggone things for the sake of cheap, homogenous, predictable food.
End Rant.
