Week #4

We have an item this week that we have NEVER had at this time of year.

GREEN TOMATOES

“And now, the rest of the story…” (yes, I am definitely old enough to remember Paul Harvey)

We just got introduced to a farm that we have never bought from…Clark’s Fruit and Vegetable Farm down on the Ohio River.

When I say “on” the Ohio River, I mean ON.

They grow tomatoes in hoop houses down there and they just walked in to get to work on planting their 2022 crop. Still hanging on the vine were the final tom’s from the 2021 crop. That final batch never turned red…so they never got picked….Buuut, they also hung there in perfect shape, suspended in the perfect temperature.

They wondered if we wanted them…always a sucker for the wild and unique items at weird times of year, I said “Of Course!”

There are lots of cool things you can do with green tomatoes, but they didn’t make the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” because that was a bad way to prepare them.

WHAT'S COOL THIS WEEK?!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
