Friday Five (January 17)

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
“What makes life worth living? No child asks itself that question. To children, life is self-evident. Life goes without saying: whether it is good or bad makes no difference. This is because children don’t see the world, don’t observe the world, don’t contemplate the world, but are so deeply immersed in the world that they don’t distinguish between it and their own selves. Not until … a distance appears between what they are and what the world is, does the question arise: what makes life worth living?”

Almost all the ancient religious scriptural texts have references to becoming "like a child".

I'm in a house right now with children at the ages of 3, 7, 11, and 14.

I've now watched the "distance appear" (mentioned in the quote above) in 2 of the 4. It will happen shortly in the other 2 as it has happened to every human throughout history.

What I have learned through them, is that (with practice) we can actually close that "distance" again.  Some people call it flow, some call it energy, chi, spirit, great mystery, even God.

Whatever you call it, may you find yourself closing that "distance" today, so that for a few seconds, judgement of what is or is not, ceases.  May you realize that it is YOU, and YOU are it.
What I'm Listening To As I Write This...
These gals were recommended by one of our own "Friday Five" readers...They do a cool thing where they record 1 live song on Sunday mornings.

Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry

This is my 3rd pass through this incredible novel by the same Wendell Berry that brings you all the life changing non-fiction on the state of our agricultural system.

This is a story about a small town barber in Kentucky in the early 1900's.

"You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out―perhaps a little at a time."
"And how long is that going to take?"
"I don't know. As long as you live, perhaps."
"That could be a long time."
"I will tell you a further mystery," he said. "It may take longer."
Game

Azul

I don't even own this one.  A good friend of mine has it and and every time I am over there I make him get it out and play it with me.

I love games with pretty tiles...that is all.
New Spiritual Practice

Burning loose incense in a cauldron.

Especially white sage.

It's really smoky and I think it drives my wife and kids nuts, but it feels sacred to me.
Show To Binge This Weekend
Looking For Alaska

It's on hulu.  It's 8 episodes.  It's one season.

John Green (Kenyon Alum), wrote this book in 2005.  I had previously read his book Papertowns and really liked it but never did a deep dive on reading any more of his works.

I was completely surprised by these characters and story line.
