Week #48

Has everyone gotten in their first viewing of ELF for the year?  If not, stop what you are doing and get that taken care of.

After that, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks.

We are transitioning into our winter months and our winter products.  We still have 6 PAGES OF PRODUCE available through our online store so if you don’t get something in your box this week that you need, you can always add it.

I have preached this for years, but remember that these are THEE most important months in the lives of our local small farms.  ANYONE can grow and sell product in July, but these special folks are making the extra efforts to keep us supplied through the hardest months of the year to grow, store, and ship produce.

Many people ask HOW we do it when it’s clear that there is almost no way to grow food in frozen ground.

The short answer is...It’s complicated.

The bulleted answer is

  • Very specific storage conditions

  • Indoor heated greenhouses

  • Indoor or outdoor row covers (think warm and fuzzy blankets for your veggies)

Let’s keep putting our $$’s in the pockets of the people that are out in these temperatures for us all day (and sometimes a good part of the night), to keep our veggies safe and warm (warm is a relative term in this sense as it just has to be warm enough NOT to freeze)

Check out our new items!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
