Week #16

“Violet, you’re turning violet!”

Oompa, Loompa, Loopity, Da
If you like blueberries, you will go far!!

This week we have enough blueberries AND ramps to make sure everybody gets some.

Doing food the way we do it, there are not always enough of any given thing to get some to everyone in the same week...hang in there, we will do our best to find everyone some over the course of a couple weeks.

A note about the cut food from Oberlin Food Hub…

This is stuff that we are trying to get creative with instead of just sending you the same old roots every week.  At this point, we are all just trying to make use of those last winter veggies so that we can be into our fresh spring and summer items.

When they process them, they finish by spraying them with ascorbid acid (vitamin c) so that they will not turn color (oxidize)...It’s like when you put lemon juice on cut apples so they don’t get brown.

Just to be sure that the product is not “bad”, I have taken home all the squash, sweet potatoes, and root slaw and cooked it for up to 2 weeks after we have had it in boxes.  There have been a few cases where it was beyond saving, but very few.

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
