Week #31

Last night my 5 year old says to me, “Dad, when it’s marshmallow season again can we get those little ones and put them in hot chocolate?”

Kid gets it.

You don’t have to be alive for very long to realize that everything is seasonal...not just food.

That being said, we have seen SO MANY GREAT foods come and go over the last couple of months.

This year, we have connected with a group called “Fresh Forward” that is here in Ohio.  They have connected us with a bunch of fruit growers that have been able to provide us with plums, apricots, cherries, donut peaches, and we have some more great fruits still to come.  There are some awesome stories that come with these as well and we will continue to tell those through social media.

There are also a couple fruits that we have found just a small amount of...not enough to put in everyone’s box….BUT, we do want to make it available to everyone through the store.

NECTARINES are an example.  Click the image to add them to your order for next week!

2 Food Security Thoughts

1.  Remember, because everything is seasonal, buy everything you can now and store for later.  When it's January, you can bring out the preserves, frozen fruit, and fermented veggies to get the nutrients you need to get you back into the months when FRESH food is available again.  This is how our ancestors have survived since the dawn of homo sapiens.

2.  I try not to be Johnny Rain Cloud but I have seen what happens when food scarcity becomes an issue.  Last year we saw just a glimpse of what can happen...REMEMBER, the food system is BROKEN.  It DID NOT get fixed last year just because it feels like it is somewhat back to normal.  Keep figuring out ways to
-GROW YOUR OWN
If you can't do that at least know
-Who Grew Your Food
*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
