Week #32

I posted this pic on instagram this week.

It’s a picture of Warren Taylor who founded Snowville Creamery.  He has since started a mushroom growing business (mostly shiitake), out of Athens, OH.

When we first got started with YB he was still with Snowville, and he had me and my family down to take a tour of the area and just talk about what it was that we were attempting to do.

Since we met I have seen many changes to the food landscape.

People have started and ended farms...sometimes the same people.

People have gotten grants, started companies (with good intentions), ran out of grant money, and folded the operation.

Restaurants have opened and closed.

We’ve been through 3 presidents and thus, 3 different United States Department of Agricultures.

A virus shut down the planet.

Warren is probably 25 years older than me so he has seen and done all of that time and time again.  Looking back, he must have seen me at 33 years old and thought, “this guy won’t be around long.”...I would have thought the same thing.

But here we are, 8 years later and he is still preaching the gospel of good food, good farms, and good friends...and we are supplying more food to more people than we ever have.

Folks, this doesn’t just happen.  This is an all-out effort by our members, week after week, year after year, to DEMAND the best food that can be grown.  We know that in order to save ourselves, our communities, and our planet, we have to know where our food is coming from.

Makes me think I might have a few more years in me.

Some delicious GET OUTSIDE AND SNACK foods:

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
