Week #15

Our business is one of constant communication.  We have to know what’s happening in the fields and on the farms so that we know how to plan our boxes each week.  We then try and communicate that to you so that you can know how to plan your meals and menus.

For months it seems that we have heard and seen the same things…the same things you have been patiently eating each week through the winter.

All of your patience will pay off shortly for we heard of fresh food coming from the outdoors right here in Ohio.

There is a wild, foraged plant that we see each spring that indicates that it’s about to be fresh crop time.  Assuming the weather holds for us, we will have the first batch of that mystery plant next week.

Many of you that have been with us for years know what I am talking about and also know what is about to happen.  We are about to see temperatures that allow our growers to create the best food our country has to offer.

In my mind, this makes you all the best consumers there can possibly be.  You’ve stuck by our growers through the lean months, and therefore through the lean $$’s for them.  You’ve created resilience, security, and predictability for each of them so that they can now do what they do best, and that’s GROW FOOD!

Long days and peaceful nights,
Yellowbird Yellowbird

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
