Just read this article.

Do I trust the FDA?  No
Do I trust the news source reporting it?  No

Doesn’t matter…neither of those things are the point.

The point is, we continue to be threatened by the very system that we built to feed us.

When I say “us”, I don’t mean you and me as we are obviously trying to opt out of that system by buying our food directly from the growers.  I know that I sound like a broken record but in my estimation, this cannot be overstated…We HAVE to continue to build out our foodshed.

Let’s just take Strawberries for an example.

In order to grow Strawberries, you have to plant them and then NOT get any fruit from them for the first year.  At that point, they start to produce a little, but it’s not until year 3 and beyond that they really start to have an abundance of yield.

Why don’t more people do it?  Because it’s hard work and because it’s not an immediate return.

How could we get more people to do it?  By working hand in hand with them as the consuming public…the “buying” half of the foodshed.  There are 2 sides to the foodshed…the growing side, and the consuming side.  Until now, we spend 90% of our attention on the consumption side, not really worrying about what it took to get us cheap, fast, predictable food.

The article above is one of a thousand examples of what that kind of thinking gets us.

Let’s continue to do better.

Class dismissed.

Ps. Our berries are safe!

#wearethefoodshed

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
