Week #21

Let’s address a giant clickbait story that is circulating right now about “supply chains”.

It’s very easy to say that there is going to be a food crisis/shortage/problem in the coming months/years because the world is in turmoil and there are wars happening in places that export 25% of the world's wheat supply etc.

Look again at that last statement.

Anything jump out at you?

Why would their be massive food shortages just because the wheat supply might be pinched?

Because what the world/news outlets call “food” is actually a “commodity.”

What has happened is that we have been tricked into replacing real food (fruits, veggies, meat and grains), with products that are made of Corn, Wheat, and Soy.

And ALL because we have built a system on what is CHEAPEST and EASIEST.  We can grow a whole lot of corn, wheat, and soy with very few people and then turn that into stuff that passes as food because it doesn’t IMMEDIATELY kill us.  (notice that immediately is in all caps)

OR, we can sell it or trade it with another country for something that they are growing that CHEAP and EASY.

Either way…IT’S NOT REAL FOOD.

Open up your box this week…THAT’S REAL FOOD.

Class dismissed.

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
