Box #24

Box #24

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Week #24

What a box this week!

Asparagus, Strawberries, Zucchini (first of the year), Garlic Scapes (super rare), plus enough other stuff to make the best fathers' day spread on the block.

What are garlic scapes? Garlic scapes are the tender stem and flower bud of a hardneck garlic plant. (Hardneck garlic is the kind of garlic that typically grows in Canada and the northeastern U.S.) Scapes first grow straight out of the garlic bulb, then coil. When harvested, they look like long, curly green beans.

This article answers these questions.

How do I prep them?

How do I eat them?

How are they different from ramps?

What do they taste like?

How long will they keep?

If you have been with the Yellowbird for years, you are familiar with this item that comes around once a year.

If you are a newbie, we hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience!

NEW UPDATE…

We no longer require a $25 minimum order.  This was something that we needed to do for a couple of years for various delivery reasons that no longer apply.

Feel free to order anything you need even if it only costs $1!  We will deliver it!!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.

What's cool this week?
