Week #25

Recently, a YB member sent me a link to a new movie that was coming out called Planet Local:  A Quiet Revolution.

You can view it HERE

There are many success stories in this movie about communities taking control of their food supply and using the concept of “Localization” to shift their trajectories.

3 of the ways that “Localization” is defined in the film are

-Shifting from dependence on global corporations toward local and regional economies

-Building or supporting place-based institutions and cultures

-Shortening the distances between producer and consumer

It always excites me to tell you about your food.  This week we have purchased the products in the boxes from 16 different local farms….EVERY ONE of them is from OHIO.  (this is not different than any other week, but still helps to hear it once in a while)

In doing this, we are hitting on all 3 of the definitions above!

Folks, this is no longer a convenience that MIGHT be a good idea.  In my observance, there is no other solution that is more impactful on so many systems as changing the way we

  1.  Eat

  2. Buy Food

We are on the front lines every week, using your $$ to bring to life what some people only see as a fairytale concept.

There are many people that watch the film above and think, “I sure wish I knew a way to take action but I don’t even know where to begin!”

We are so blessed to be surrounded by a local food system that has sustained us through a pandemic, and will continue to do so through more of the trials and tribulations to come.

Let’s keep working together to manifest what we know the world needs!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
