Week #41

Over the years we have always tried to be transparent with our customers so that you could catch glimpses of what is actually happening with your food as it goes from being just a thought on a page in the middle of the winter, all the way to your kitchen.

This week, we had one of those mini “disasters” that happens when working with real food and mother nature.

We have been planning on having a fall harvest of broccoli, purple cauliflower, and white cauliflower.  This plan has been in the works since last winter when we coordinated with one of our growers to do this crop for us.

Everything was looking good all the way up through this weekend and then we went down to pick it up yesterday and it was almost all bad.  The best we can tell it was a combination of the unusually hot weather we are experiencing right now and maybe a mistimed pick (yes, it actually matters at what time of day things are harvested).

Either way, many of you had ordered some of these products and we were also going to include them in boxes this week.  There was a tiny amount that was salvageable but for the most part, it was a crop failure.

Luckily, we have been in the game long enough to always have a plan B, but this is the risk that we, and more importantly our growers run when planning to grow food for our foodshed.

Obviously, there are piles of amazing food that we were able to get and send your way this week but I think it’s good to always be aware of the things that didn’t work as well so that we can continue to become closer and closer to our food source.

Enjoy This Weather!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
