Week #42

Continuing on from a couple weeks ago where I introduced the book, Diet For A Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe, I want us to consider another food related threat.

HOW WE FEED OURSELVES WORSENS CLIMATE CHAOS

Our Food System Globally generates as much as 37 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.  This is due to our large shift to corporate, chemical practices.

I talked to a group of college students the other night about changing the definition of “food”.  I basically told them that as a general rule, anything that is not on the perimeter of a grocery store is not actually “food”.  It’s highly processed, chemical dependent, genetically modified commodities (corn, wheat, and soy) that get turned into shapes, oils, and syrups and marketed with millions (probably billions) of dollars...as food.

We’ve got to get back to eating real food.

I will keep emphasizing, this is not a convenience, it is a necessity.

As Frances Moore Lappe puts it, “Either we now make a big turn, or life on Earth as we know it is gone forever.”

Sometimes we have to hear the bad news to get to the good news.

We CAN make change.  YOU ARE DOING IT.  Keep it up!!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
