50 years ago a little book was written called Diet For A Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe’. Until 2 weeks ago I had never heard of it but then heard about it from 3 different places and knew I should probably read it. They just launched a 50th-anniversary edition with updates from the author who is still alive and well.
Over the next couple of weeks, I want to hit on a couple of things she addresses and open the discussion to you on anything that you might want to dialogue about because of it.
First off, she talks about hope vs. blind optimism. “Honest Hope”, as the author calls it, organizes our brain towards SOLUTIONS, and sees possibilities even in the dark.
Lappe’ then outlines 10 food related assaults on life that have arisen or worsened in the last 50 years, the time since her book was first published.
#1: Vast Hunger Continues Amid Plenty - More than enough calories are produced to meet everyone's needs, yet 700 million of us go hungry and 1 in every 5 children worldwide are stunted by malnutrition.
Again, I am not proposing solutions, nor do I pretend to have them...I just want us to engage these topics as a community that is changing our lives around the food we eat, to be aware of the issues, and to continue to use our collective resources to be open to solutions.
This time of year we are starting to see things like cabbage, squash, broccoli, beans, radish, leeks, fennel, and brussels sprouts coming in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
We have at least 6 varieties of apples and are still getting nectarines, peaches, and asian pears (which are out of this world good).
Our eyes are on Thanksgiving and our online ordering is starting to fill out nicely with turkeys, half turkeys, pies, and all the fruits and veggies you need to make this your best Thanksgiving ever! (I am hosting my in laws from Texas this year and am definitely taking it as a challenge to show them how Ohio brings it)
