Week #33

This is the 33rd delivery of 2021!!

On Monday I was out of town and walked into a Kroger to grab a beverage and saw that the toilet paper aisle was mostly empty shelves.  I am VERY rarely in a grocery store so it surprised me a little to see this but it always makes me appreciate that the fact that I don’t have to rely on the grocery store.

Folks, I’ve said for years, that we are one major catastrophe away from exposing the broken food system.  Do I want it to happen?  OF COURSE NOT.  But, what happens when the pinch in the distribution system is not toilet paper, or lumber, but the food on which 99.9% of our population relies on?

We have built an ALTERNATIVE food system (foodshed).  Make no mistake, we carry a few items that you can find at Whole Foods (mostly for the convenience of our customers), but when push comes to shove, 90% of our food here at the YB is NOT affected by the systems that are at play in the mainstream food system.

Fruits, veggies, dairy, eggs, meat, are coming STRAIGHT from the farms.

What happens in a worst-case scenario?  For us, not much.

My piece of advice?  Shop and eat like your life depended on it...and maybe more importantly, like the life of your farmer depended on it.

Let us take care of a meal for you next week...

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
