Week #13

It’s that time of year.  I’m almost positive that if I looked back at newsletters from prior years, I would see these same words.

Basically, we are stuck in limbo.  We are living off of our stores from last year, eating fresh greens that can be grown under protection during the winter months, and WAITING on all the fresh stuff that Ohio has to offer.

From a person that eats very seasonally, I’m asking you to trust me through the next couple of weeks that fresh food is on the way.  When it gets here your body and brain will be so glad you are in tune with the changing seasons.

The good news is that the spinach that you are seeing this week is a crop that was planted and grown over the past couple of months in hoop houses, but definitely out of the soil right under our own Ohioan feet…it’s whispering to us, “there’s more to come!”

In the meantime I want you to know that over the last 2 months we have sat down with countless growers and producers and told them about you, their customers.  I describe how you put your $$ where your mouth is, how you believe in them, how you are willing to stake your food security and your and your family's health on their production and growing practices.

You do see that we are in this together?  You do see that it does matter who grows your food?  I saw our President make a statement about how food shortages in 2022 are “going to be real”.  Trust me when I tell you that this is exactly what we are built for.  Obviously, we are not immune from disaster, but we are looking as far ahead as we can afford, to try and build you a foodshed that you can have confidence in!

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
