Week #29

One of our most common questions is “How do you pick what goes in the box each week?”

Answer:  (What’s in season) X (How much it costs) / (Total # of items) +(Consideration of what was in the boxes during previous weeks and what is coming up in the next couple of weeks) = What goes into this week’s box

Sometimes, we hope you get what you were hoping to get.
Sometimes, we hope you were surprised and got something you didn’t know you wanted.
Sometimes, we hope you got something you didn’t want, but then you realized that you actually kind of wanted it.
Sometimes, we hope you got what you wanted, but you didn’t get what you wanted.
Sometimes, we hope we got you what you wanted, and not only did you not get what you wanted, but you also got what you DIDN’T want!

This is the way.

I use that phrase because logistically we have tried EVERYTHING that we can think of.  If we do it any other way a couple of things happen.

Food goes to waste.
Which then means money goes to waste.
We can’t plan well enough for the grower to be able to have the right quantities of food.
We can’t ensure that everyone (customers) get to try a little of everything throughout the course of the year.

We do it the way we do it because it ensures that

Everyone gets at least SOME of the best things grown in Ohio each year.
Everyone gets MANY of the staple foods that we know you need a lot of.
Everyone gets pushed a LITTLE into new directions that they might not have gone otherwise.
ALL growers of the best food on the planet get PAID what the product is WORTH!!

This is the way.

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
