Week #30

This week we focus on the “WHO” in “Who Grew Your Food?”

For this week’s boxes (mini, base, and full) we purchased food from 16 different growers.

To fill each of the boxes, we purchased 40 INDIVIDUAL VARIETIES of produce.

Today (Tuesday) as I write this, our trucks and vans are out on the roads of Ohio, picking up those 40 varieties from those 16 growers in order to have them back here, unloaded, organized, portioned, and ready to build boxes tomorrow morning so that it can start it’s journey towards your home or community pickup spot.

We will be visiting Busy Bee Organics, Creekside Greenhouse, Clarina Organics, Pleasant View Organics, Quarry Hill Orchards, Ruben Hershberger, Andy Yoder, Bradwood Farm, and Three Creeks just to name a few.

These are the men and women that thank each week on your behalf.  These are the men and women that are on the front lines of our health, and the health of our planet.

This is where your bounty comes from.  This is where your health comes from.  This is where your money is being deposited into the soil so that the next generation might have the opportunity to both GROW, and also CONSUME the sacred food that sustains both our own personal bodies, as well as the shared bodies of our communities.

This is the way.

NOTE:

We recently did a video for our cities (Mount Vernon) website.  We have posted it on our webpage www.yellowbirdfs.com  (scroll down just a little)
In the top left corner there are “share” buttons.  You can share it through social media, as well as direct email.  If you have a second, would you send this out into the universe?

*A foodshed is the geographic region that produces the food for a particular population. The term is used to describe a region of food flows, from the area where it is produced, to the place where it is consumed, including: the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. "Foodshed" is described as a "socio-geographic space: human activity embedded in the natural integument of a particular place."[1] A foodshed is analogous to a watershed in that foodsheds outline the flow of food feeding a particular population, whereas watersheds outline the flow of water draining to a particular location. Through drawing from the conceptual ideas of the watershed, foodsheds are perceived as hybrid social and natural constructs.
